Different Perspective

20101030_CXO

I’ve worked the evening shift for at least six years. Let’s just say in that time I’ve missed a few sunrises and the ones I see are usually rough until I get going. Last Saturday I found myself on E-470 as the sun was breaking the horizon. Why? Well, as soon as I find the person that scheduled state cross country in the middle of nowhere I’ll let you know. As I turned on E. Jewell and noticed the morning light hitting the Twin Peaks I was awake enough to get out of the car and snap a couple frames.

I love coffee.

New adventures in photography and business

I’ve always tried to dabble in wedding photography. However, I’ve never been really serious about marketing or investing the time and money into the business. That is until this year.

Last year I booked two weddings for 2010. Not bad for having no business cards, a wedding website or any other marketing tools. Earlier this summer, while on a golf outing with my good friend, college pal and former news photographer Joshua Lawton we decided to seriously approach business. In a short few months we’ve created Joshua & Co. Photography, specializing in photojournalism weddings, portraits and lifestyle photography.

We’re actually a real company, with insurance, a real bank account and a parent company — Consortium Productions, LLC. Under this name, which is actually registered with the state of Colorado, we are venturing into commercial photography, video and multimedia. We have an operating agreement, an accountant and everything.

Needless to say, we are very excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. While it’s been a lot of work setting up a business, marketing and fulfilling our clients’ needs, we are confident in its success. It’s been easier than going at it alone, as we both brought clients and work to the table from the get go. I will say, however, that going through this entire process has actually made me feel like an adult. No longer am I just a guy with a camera that occasionally photographs a wedding here, a portrait there or a freelance gig over there. I now have real responsibility, not only to our clients, but also to the company’s well-being and growth.

I invite you to look through our portfolios, pass along our information to potential clients and wish us luck.

Why stop? Because it’s Colorado, that’s why.

Maybe I stopped the car because I’ve been inspired by the reader photos I’ve been uploading this month. (Those galleries are chalk full of these types of pictures.) Or maybe I stopped the car because deep down I was dreading another volleyball game. Or maybe I just stopped because it was a great looking sunset.

Nonetheless, I stopped this is one of just many reasons people love Colorado.

Dani Jo’s Birthday

Tired of her birthday outfit Danica Jo opts for her birthday suit following a party to mark her second year of life Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010.

A couple months ago my mother-in-law called from an estate sale. Long story short she scored two Nikon Rangefinders and three lenses for $50. Quite a score to say the least.  I finally got one of the bodies back from the repair shop last Thursday and had to run a roll through the beast. As I kicked back tonight I kept thinking about whether or not the photos came out, including a few from Dani’s party today. I ran down to our darkroom at the paper and here is a quick frame. I cannot wait to run more rolls through this thing.

Happy Birthday, Dani. You make me so happy.

Harvest Moon

20100923_MOON

Is it technically the “Harvest Moon” the following day? I awoke last week prepared to head out and shoot the Harvest Moon setting over the Twin Peaks as I did a couple years ago. However, clouds were socked in over the mountains and it wasn’t happening. So, to get my fix I headed out later Thursday evening to shoot the moon rise. Here are the results. I had no plan. What I did have was a full tank of gas and some time to roam county roads before dusk. Now, I have an entire year to plan for the next one.

Germs not welcome here

20100824_FLAGSTAFF_ACADEMY

Took a photo of the first thing I saw at a charter school in Longmont today. I’ve never seen so many Clorox and Lysol wipes outside of a store setting. And papertowels? This place is going to remain spotless and germ-free.

Dogs run wild

I’ve been sitting on this photo for a couple days, wondering if I should post it here.

I’ve decided. The world should see the exclusive photo from the grotto at the Playdog Mansion. While I wish there was more separation in the layers of the photo the fact of the matter is it was the “decisive moment. ”

I bet next year when the city opens the pool to the dogs on the last day of the year they put a sign out front: No horsedog play allowed.

It was quite a laugh when I dropped the proof on the night editor’s desk with the caption: “Dogs get it on at Roosevelt Pool on the last day of the pool season Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010.” He thought I was serious. He then said there was no way this was making the paper. The photo editor chimed in with ‘Why not? I don’t see anything wrong.’

Oh, to be a dog…

Boulder County Fair

How can you go wrong with bulls, cowboys and mutton bustin? It was a pretty fun night photographing the fair. And the best part? It’s over tomorrow!

Strangers with Similarities

20100730_TEEN_MOM_4

Every so often I photograph an assignment that makes me think about my own life.

This was one of those assignments.

My mom, like Becca, was a teen mother. Both also finished their high school educations while pregnant and after delivery. However, unlike this baby’s father, mine stuck it out. Now that I too am a parent I understand the trials and tribulations coupled with the responsibility.

This is also one of those assignments when I wonder how these lives will evolve. We should all be keeping lists of people to visit and followup with years on down the road.

Those stories could be interesting.

Butterfly flutter

I arrived early to an assignment this morning. I knocked on the door and it opened. The subject, in wet hair and brush in hand, reminded me I was early. She shut the door. I sat on the porch and thought of the four assignments awaiting me. My hopes of getting this one done early so the day would go smoothly were dashed. I saw a butterfly. Back and forth, back and forth. I only shot one frame. Then the door opened. I was on my way.
